ALMUNIA DE SAN MIGUEL

La Almunia de San Miguel is a charming guesthouse that transports us to an atmosphere of tranquillity and mystery, in the heart of what was once the old Templar quarter of Toledo.

A space of intimate dimensions and rooms gathered around a courtyard that vertebrates the rooms and acts as the central nucleus of the building, following the tradition of Toledo houses, a tradition that dates back to the Roman peristyles and that the Arabs so skilfully continued, sowing the ancient city with buildings with an austere façade, but turned inwards. An interior that, in this case, transports us to other times, evoking the tranquillity and luxury that were almost lost and that La Almunia recovers and transmits to us as soon as we cross the threshold.

The origins of the building date back to the XVII century, although the endowment of the old cistern (now a dining room for breakfast) is lost in the Middle Ages… once again we connect with a Templar past, mysterious and so prone to various legends and fables… very topical these days. Without going any further, Almunia itself becomes an improvised setting for the novel «El Gran Arcano» by Paloma Sanchez-Garnica. Almunia …its name sounds like an Andalusian legend, a nostalgic desire on the banks of the Tagus…and so diving into the past we find the perfect name: Almunia, from the classical Arabic munyah, which means desire, but also orchard, which in the case of this guest house has taken the form of a beautifully calm courtyard, like the city that hosts it.
